The Parish Pastoral Council

 

St. John's Parish Pastoral Council seeks to involve parishioners in decisions affecting the life and mission of the parish. The Pastoral Council is "uniquely called to read the signs of the times, to be prophetic people in tune with the Scriptures." The Council assists the Pastor in the service of leadership within the parish by sharing with him its vision, experience, and perceptions of the parish community.

The Pastoral Council consists of the Pastor and twelve elected and appointed members. Potential members are nominated by the people of the parish each spring, and willing nominees participate in a Council discernment process to select candidates from which the parish elects new council members. New members begin their term in July. Council members serve an initial three-year term, and may serve a second three-year term, followed by a year of ineligibility to serve.

At the Council Retreat in August, members discern the chair and the vice-chair, who serve with the Pastor as the members of the Council's Executive Committee for one year. The Pastor may appoint up to two additional members to ensure balanced representation. Other members may be appointed to represent areas of specific need such as youth/young adults and recent immigrants. Appointed members serve a one-year term.

 

Parishioners are welcome to attend regular meetings of the Pastoral Council, on dates announced in the weekly Sunday bulletins.

The Parish Finance Council

 

The Parish Finance Council serves as a financial advisory board to the Pastor, and consists of six members of the parish, each of whom may serve up to two three-year terms. The Parish Administrator serves as the staff liaison to the Finance Council.

 

Included among the Finance Council's duties are the following:

 

To consult with the Pastor on business matters
To review monthly, quarterly and annual financial information
To assist the Pastor and staff in formulating the annual parish budget
To recommend investment strategies
To encourage parishioners to support the financial needs of the parish

 

The Finance Council meets on the third or fourth Thursday of the month six times per year. The Finance Council provides a complete financial report to the Parish Council twice each year.

Collection Counters

 

The Collection Counters work in small teams to count, deposit, and document offertory and other receipts. Count teams are assigned to count and deposit the offertory receipts one weekend per month, with a time commitment of approximately three hours on the team's assigned weekend. Parishioners with backgrounds that include accounting for cash receipts and/or bank deposits will have a natural aptitude for this ministry. Additional Collection Counters are currently being sought.
